Responding With Compassion
‘Responding with Compassion’ enables participants to develop their mindfulness practice by training in compassion. It is ideal for those who have completed the Level 1 ‘Being Present’ Mindfulness Course and who wish to continue to develop their mindfulness practice so as to hold inner experience with warmth and kindness.
This secular course starts with building self-compassion into basic mindfulness practice. Through compassionate imagery and mindful self-compassion, we cultivate positive emotions as a way of building up an inner resource, from which we can approach the difficulties that are part and parcel of being alive. We then approach the self-critic: that persistent inner voice that is harsh and condemning, and always finding
fault in what we do.
What it would be like to cultivate an inner voice that is kind and supportive, and to live life from this place, rather than from a place of destructive self- criticism?
In the course of the journey we move from self-compassion towards compassion for others, exploring practices which help us find balance and perspective beyond our narrow preferences, generating love and friendliness to our inner and outer worlds, responding appropriately to pain and suffering while also appreciating the good things in our lives, integrating compassion into all that we do. As there is a strong emphasis
on the experiential nature of the course, there are home practice suggestions between the sessions that include regular compassion practice and daily life exercises.
Online and In-Person Course
As well as home practice, the course involves 4 study/practice weekends in Zagreb. At the time of writing, it is hoped that the situation with corona virus will allow us to meet in-person in Gornji Grad, Zagreb. The first weekend, however, will be online due to current restrictions. If necessary, each weekend will be online. The decision regarding whether or not the weekend can be in-person, will be made in advance of each weekend.
Online study/practice weekends will meet on Friday 18.00-21:00; Saturday 09:00-14:30; Sunday 09:00-13:45.
In-person study/practice weekends will be on Saturday and Sunday, each day from 10:00-17:00.
The dates of the study/practice weekends are:
Module / Weekend 1: 19, 20, 21 February 2021 (online)
Module / Weekend 2: 08-09 May 2021
Module / Weekend 3: 17-18 July 2021
Module / Weekend 4: 11-12 Sept 2021
Responding with Compassion will be taught by Lead Tutor Anna Zubrzycki from Poland and Dr David McMurtry from Zagreb. The course is open to anyone who has completed the ‘Being Present’ Level 1 Mindfulness Course or an equivalent course.
The themes for each module / weekend are:

Module / Weekend 4: Compassion in Action
Each weekend involves:
- Tutor-lead seminars
- Tutor-led mindfulness practices
- Silent mindfulness practice
- Small and whole group discussions
- Opportunities to raise questions.
Each of the 4 modules (including the study/practice weekend) costs 1500 kuna or€199.00. The course fee can be paid in 4 installments or in one payment.
The course fee includes:
- A course manual or handbook (in English)
- Audio recordings of tutor lead practices (in English)
- All seminars at the four study/practice weekends.
Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a ‘certificate of completion’.
If you are already a trained teacher of the 8-week Mindfulness Based Living Course (MBLC), upon completion of ‘Responding With Compassion’, you can then undertake mindfulness teacher training to also teach the Mindfulness Association 8-week Compassion – Based Living Course (CBLC).
